The confusion is real

You keep hearing about "forgiveness". Why doesn't it help you?

The news, the government, TikTok — everyone talks about student loan forgiveness. But when you check the fine print, none of it applies to your private loans. Here's why so many private borrowers feel lied to.

PSLF doesn't apply

Public Service Loan Forgiveness only covers federal Direct Loans. Your private loans from Sallie Mae, Navient, Firstmark, Discover — none of them qualify, no matter what job you take.

IDR plans don't apply

Income-Driven Repayment (IDR, SAVE, PAYE, IBR) are federal programs. Private lenders have their own rules — and they rarely include payment reductions based on your income.

Executive orders don't apply

Every headline about "loan cancellation" from the White House applies to federal loans only. Private student loans have never been included in any executive forgiveness program.

The good news

Your private loans can be reduced or discharged — just not through "forgiveness".

Real paths to relief

Three legitimate ways to reduce your private loans.

None of these are "forgiveness" in the federal sense — but each one has helped thousands of private loan borrowers regain financial control. Which one fits your situation? That's what the free consultation is for.

Debt validation

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), you can require your lender or collector to prove the debt is valid and enforceable. When they can't validate properly, borrowers may have grounds to make the balance legally uncollectable.

Negotiated resolution

Private lenders often settle for a fraction of the balance rather than risk losing everything to a legal challenge or bankruptcy. We evaluate whether your account qualifies for a negotiated resolution that dramatically reduces what you owe.

Discharge in bankruptcy

Recent legal developments have made it easier to discharge private student loans in bankruptcy under specific circumstances. We can assess whether this path might apply to you and connect you with the right legal resources.

The process

The truth vs the myth

What people think about private loan forgiveness — vs the reality.

The internet is full of misinformation. Here's what actually works for private student loan borrowers.

Topic
Common myth
The reality
Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)
"After 10 years working for a nonprofit, my loans are gone"
PSLF only applies to federal Direct Loans. Private loans are excluded.
Executive orders / mass cancellation
"The president will cancel all student loans"
Every cancellation program has excluded private loans. That's unlikely to change.
Bankruptcy discharge
"Student loans can never be discharged in bankruptcy"
Recent court rulings have made private loan discharge easier under specific circumstances.
Debt validation (FDCPA)
"You have to pay whatever the collector says"
Federal law requires collectors to prove the debt. When they can't, the balance may become uncollectable.
Negotiated resolution
"Private lenders never settle"
Private lenders regularly settle for fractions of the balance to avoid legal exposure.

Straight answers

Everything you wanted to know about private loan forgiveness.

No spin. No hype. Just the honest answers you deserve.

Can private student loans be forgiven?
Not in the same way federal loans can. Federal forgiveness programs (PSLF, IDR, executive orders) explicitly exclude private student loans. However, "forgiveness" isn't the only path to relief. Private loans can be reduced through debt validation under the FDCPA, negotiated resolutions, or discharge in bankruptcy under specific circumstances. Each requires a different strategy — that's what our free consultation helps you figure out.
What about PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness)?
PSLF only applies to federal Direct Loans. If you work for a qualifying employer for 10 years and make 120 qualifying payments, your remaining federal balance can be forgiven — but this program does not include private student loans from Sallie Mae, Navient, Firstmark, Discover, or any other private lender. If you have private loans, PSLF is not an option for you regardless of your career.
What about executive orders and mass cancellation?
Every federal cancellation program announced to date — under any administration — has excluded private student loans. Political discussions around further cancellation almost always focus exclusively on federal debt. Waiting for a government bailout on your private loans is not a strategy. There are things you can do right now, without depending on legislation that may never come.
Can I discharge private student loans in bankruptcy?
For a long time, discharging any student loan in bankruptcy was extremely difficult. Recent court rulings and updated federal guidance have made it easier under specific circumstances — particularly for private loans that don't qualify as "qualified educational loans" under the Bankruptcy Code. Whether this applies to your situation depends on factors like the type of school you attended and how the loans were structured. Our team can help you assess this option.
How does debt validation work?
Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), when a debt collector attempts to enforce a debt against you, you have the right to request formal validation. This means requiring them to provide documentation proving they own the debt, the amount is accurate, and it is legally enforceable. When collectors cannot properly validate — which happens more often than you'd think — borrowers may have grounds to make the balance legally uncollectable.
Is this legitimate? It sounds too good to be true.
The FDCPA is a federal law that's been on the books since 1977. Debt validation is a well-established consumer right. Negotiated settlements are how the debt industry works — creditors settle every day. Bankruptcy discharge for private student loans is being expanded by court rulings across the country. None of this is a loophole or a scam — it's your rights, applied strategically. If any part of this doesn't apply to you, we'll tell you honestly during the free consultation.
What does the consultation cost?
Nothing. The consultation is completely free. No credit card, no obligation, no strings attached. If your situation qualifies and you decide to move forward with our program, we'll walk you through the full cost breakdown before you commit to anything. Transparency is a core value — you'll never be surprised by a bill.
